No matter what educational options you choose for your family, summertime is a good time for reading! Your best source for summer reading programs is your local public library. In addition to prizes and free books, libraries often host programs and special events. Here is a round-up of some other reading programs and resources I’ve heard about:

Barnes & Noble: Read 8 books, write about your favorite, and get a free book from a participating Barnes & Noble book store.

Build-a-Bear: Details are not yet available, but check back later on the web site.

Pizza Hut Brain Food Summer Reading Fun: Read 5 books and enter to win prizes.

Education World Summer Reading: Find book lists and reading enrichment activities.

Scholastic Summer Reading Buzz: When kids read and log 4 books, Scholastic will donate a book to a child in need. Parents can also find book lists and games for different grade levels on the site.

Reading Warriors: This reading challenge for kids 8 and up is based on Erin Hunter’s Warriors feline adventure books.

I’ll add to the list as I find out about others. Let me know in the comments if you know of a summer reading program or resource that isn’t limited to a particular region.

(Update: See this post for Summer 2009 reading programs and book lists.)
