WFMW: learning to music

wfmwsmall.jpgAs I was doing my Bible study and humming the song I learned as a child to remember the books of the New Testament to myself recently, I started thinking about all the other things that I committed to memory over the years and how much easier it was to memorize things that were set to music. My niece’s kindergarten teacher helps them remember the months of the year and the name of the continents using songs.

Here are a few that you might find helpful when teaching your kids. Let me know in the comments any others that you sing with your family—or that you remember from when you were a kid! I can still remember the song my 8th grade English teacher taught us so we would remember all the prepositions.

Continents
(sung to the tune of Frere Jacques)

There are seven
there are seven
continents
continents
Europe, Asia, Africa
North and South America,
Australia, Antarctica

Days of the Week
(sung to the chorus of the Addams Family theme)

Days of the week (snap, snap) [young kids can clap instead]
days of the week (snap, snap)
days of the week, days of the week, days of the week (snap, snap)
There’s Sunday and there’s Monday, there’s Tuesday and there’s Wednesday, there’s Thursday and there’s Friday and then there’s Saturday!

OR

(sung to the tune of Happy Days)

Sunday, Monday, happy days.
Tuesday, Wednesday, happy days.
Thursday, Friday, happy days.
Saturday, what a day,
Learning all week with you!

.

Months of the Year
(sung to the tune of Michael Finnegan aka Ten Little Teddy Bears)

January, February, March and April
May and June, July and August
September, October, November, December
these are the months of the year!

You are so right! My boys are in AWANAs this year and need to memorize scripture weekly. I’ve discovered with my youngest, if I sing it, doesn’t matter what the tune is, if I sing it, he’ll sing it and remember it in about 2 minutes. If I just say it and repeat it over and over again, it takes him 15 minutes or so to remember the verse. I guess music just has a way of making an imprint on our brains!
